Despite all preventative attempts, metabolic syndrome is this century’s nightmare; unfortunately increasing in all age groups from school-aged children to seniors. We still do not know how to fully cure or prevent metabolic syndrome. Patients with metabolic syndrome usually consume more calories than they need, and can’t utilize these calories accordingly.
Yoga is beneficial as an add-on in the treatment of metabolic syndrome and helps by:
- Lowering blood sugar
- By increasing insulin sensitivity (reducing insulin resistance)
- Lowering total and LDL cholesterol levels
- Reducing waist circumference
- Lowering cortisol levels
- Reducing chronic inflammation
- Correcting the HPA axis imbalance
- Reducing sympathetic dominance
- Lowering blood pressure
- Improving sleep quality
While correcting metabolic findings, yoga also reduces co-existent anxiety and depression symptoms of patients, thus improving the quality of life, positive affect and hopefulness. In short, yoga makes patients feel better.
In the long run, the patients need for oral anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive treatment decreases. However do not make any changes to your medications with out consulting your doctor. It takes some time to see results when you start to do yoga. Do not expect any significant changes after 1-2 classes; keep patience with persistence.
Practice, practice, practice…
All will come.
